(a look) Underneath

 

 

In a period when women are consistently homogenized by their sex and marginalized as objects, “Underneath” is an artistic reclamation of the female identity through one of their most coveted of ‘assets’ – breasts.

 

Calling upon her subjects to anonymously, though candidly, expose themselves, artist Chalavie ,AKA Charlotte Vanhaecke asks viewers to see these subjects as “women in the raw”. Foregoing the base social constructs widdled in sex and marred by self-consciousness, Underneath looks beyond the surface to what is inside each subject – a sense of fragility, a declaration of strength, an honest self, a willingness to share; all of which are uniquely beautiful.
